If you own a Tesla or any other new EV with a NACS port for charging, having J1772 to NACS adapter in your glovebox will ensure you can get a charge at any Level 2 charger in North America. For a long time, J1772 was the dominant EV connector type at public charging stations like malls, hotels, parking lots, and even many home EV chargers.

Only more recently have EVs and infrastructure began to transition towards NACS ports and charging connectors. We are still in a transition period where EV drivers need to carry adapters for compatibility at all stations. We buy and test a lot of adapters, and below you will find our favorite J1772 to NACS adapters.

Note: This page is about charging NACS port EVs on “slow” J1772 destination chargers. If you’re looking for DC fast charging adapters for CCS stations, check out this page instead.

Why trust us? We have hands-on testing experience with the most popular EV charging products.

Focsprod J1772 to NACS Adapter

Focsprod J1772 to NACS adapter

Focsprod makes the most popular aftermarket J1772 to NACS charging adapter. It’s supports charging at up to 80 amps, it’s UL 2252 compliant (that’s the UL standard specific to EV adapters), and it’s long enough to interface with even Cybertruck charging ports without interference. Pricing is also competitive vs. alternatives. If you don’t want to look at all the options, just get this one.

It’s important to buy an 80 amp rated adapter instead of cheaper 48 or 60 amp ones. Because even if your current EV only charges at 48 amps, it’s possible your next EV may support higher amperage and you may unknowingly pass more current through the adapter than is safe. Therefore, we only recommend 80 amp rated adapters in this article.

Specs

  • Up to 80 amps
  • Up to 250 volts
  • 3 year warranty
  • UL 2252 compliant
  • -22°F to 122°F operating range

Aipechy J1772 to NACS Adapter

Aipechy J1772 to NACS Adapter

This is often the cheapest option, depending on time of year. But the J1772 to NACS adapter from Aipechy is another good option.

While not officially certified to UL specs, the 80 amp rating makes us comfortable to use and recommend this adapter. The Aipechy adapter can be used in rain or snow thanks to P65 weather resistance and is backed by a two year warranty.

Specs

  • Up to 80 amps
  • Up to 250 volts
  • Storage bag included
  • 2 year warranty

What you need to know about charging NACS EV (& Teslas) on J1772 Charging Stations

When do you need a J1772 to Tesla/NACS adapter?

If you have a Tesla or another EV with a NACS/J3400 charging port, you can charge at Tesla Superchargers, Tesla Destination Chargers, and Tesla Wall Connectors without the use of any adapter. But if you want to take advantage of many public charging stations that still use the older J1772 charging connector, that’s when you need an adapter like the ones listed on this page.

Do new Teslas include an adapter form the factory?

Yes, new Tesla vehicle deliveries in North America usually include an adapter for charging at J1772 stations. Some non-Tesla EV brands also include an adapter. But these small adapters often get lost or misplaced, that’s why we’ve bought and tested aftermarket adapters for your consideration.

Does the J1772 adapter work with all Tesla models?

Yes it works with all modern Tesla models and EVs equipped with NACS port for Level 2 charging.

Does amperage matter for J1772 adapters?

Yes, it’s better to get an “over-rated” adapter for margin of safety. Level 2 charging can go as high as 80 amps when both the vehicle and charging station support it. But even if you current EV only charges at 48 amps, it’s better to buy an 80 amp rated adapter in case you accidentally or unknowingly use it in an 80 amp application. Maybe your next EV goes to 80 amps, or maybe you let a friend borrow the adapter to charge their EV pickup truck. 80-amp adapters are not much more expensive than 48 or 60 amp adapters.
