At this point in time, there are two competing EV charging ports for AC charging an electric vehicle in North America: J1772 used by majority EVs that aren’t Teslas, and NACS/Tesla connectors.
The majority of public AC charging infrastructure uses J1772 connectors, but many locations are now catering to Tesla and other NACS equipped cars. So if you are an owner on an EV with a J1772 charging port, you could purchase one of the adapters listed on this page to ensure you can get a charge regardless of which connector you come across.
Note: When we say AC (alternating current) charging, we mean 240v charging at home, hotels, parking lots, etc…, not DC (direct current) fast charging at Superchargers and other fast charging networks. For charging non-Tesla at Superchargers, look at these adapters instead.

EVDANCE NACS to J1772 Adapter

This is my default recommendation for owners of J1772-equipped EVs looking to charge on NACS Level 2 chargers. The adapter from EVDANCE is well designed, feels durable, and has a locking switch at the bottom to ensure a secure fit.
Most EVs and most L2 chargers max out at 48 amps, but we only recommend adapters supporting 80 amps (including this one), in case you one day own a car that can charge at 80 amps on AC. It’s better to buy an over rated adapter than to have something accidentally melt later. As a bonus, the adapter from EVDANCE comes in white, which I prefer because it heats up less when exposed to the sun outside.
LENZ NACS to J1772 Adapter

I’ve tested the entire lineup of EV adapters from LENZ, and they’re all consistently well made. This NACS-to-J1772 adapter from LENZ is probably the most compact adapter of its’ type, while still supporting 80 amps and built-in locking mechanism. Being so small is a benefit, because you can chuck it into your glovebox and always have it handy.
We tested this adapter with two EVs and several home and public L2 chargers without issue. LENZ frequently has this item on sale.

Raylix NACS to J1772 Adapter

Raylix is another reputable supplier of EV charging adapters. This one is rated up to 80 amps, like the others, and it has locking mechanisms at both ends. Raylix claims their adapter is one of the toughest in the category, it has a very wide operating temperature range and it supposed to survive 6.5 foot drops and even getting run over by a car.
I haven’t run mine over, but from owning this for several weeks it has performed well at 48 amps without interrupting charging session or becoming concerningly warm.

What you need to know about charging J1772 cars on Tesla/NACS chargers
- Note: the products tested on this page are strictly for Level 1 (120v) and Level 2 (240v) charging at home and/or public destination chargers. For adapters for DC fast charging, check out our guide here.
- These adapters basically reconfigure the physical connection layout from the NACS pins to the J1772 pins. The voltage and communication is the same between NACS and J1772 chargers.
- Teslas use the NACS connector for both L1/L2 AC charging and L3 DC fast charging at Superchargers. Many non-Tesla EVs that are transitioning to NACS ports also utilize the single port for both AC and DC charging.
However, some vehicles (like the third generation Nissan Leaf and Porsche Cayenne EV) that use a NACS port for DC charging but still use a J1772 port for AC charging. This is bound to confuse new owners, who will need a NACS-to-J1772 adapter for AC charging despite having a NACS port built-in.
